This Sous Voile Riesling from Chris Barth in the Rheinhessen is a wine from his oldest vineyards in Alzey.
The vines are deeply rooted in volcanic melaphyre, the grapes were picked by hand and after pressing and a short maceration period, the wine was poured into an old half-barrel barrel.
Fermented under the influence of oxygen, flor yeast was formed, which protected the wine.
Bottled without filtration and unfined, without the addition of sulfur.

Christopher Barth is a young garagiste from the well-regarded Geisenheim enology school. This is a generation not raised on the würstel-sweet-Riesling-cruise-control.
They are rethinking wine growing, winemaking, and wine aesthetics. They are also adamant about biodynamic viticulture, and making trocken wines (truly trocken wines!).
Christopher has 7 hectares of Demeter biodynamic-certified vineyards in three different plots in the part of the Rheinhessen that borders Würtemberg to the south, and the Pfalz to the southeast.
The style here is crystalline, and herbal, with streaks of citric energy. A big part of the magic is the organic work in the vineyards, but there’s also the craft of Christopher’s tasting and blending of various vineyard plots, barrels, and grape varieties.
