The Dönnhoff family has been making wine in this region since the 1750s. Helmut Dönnhoff took over in 1971 where the estate expanded to around 20 hectares, and also grew in reputation. Today his son, Cornelius Dönnhoff, oversees all operations and Dönnhoff is considered to be one of Germany’s top producers.
The Kahlenberg vineyard is highest rated vineyard in Bad Kreuznach with references going back to 1499. The slope faces due south, soil is quartz, gravelly loam, unusual for the Donnhoff estate, giving the wines a spicy character. Vines are 25 to 45 years old with yields 45 hl/ha and farming carried out organically. Grapes are hand harvested and carefully selected with fermentation and maturation in large wooden barrels and stainless steel vats. Drink now or hold until 2035.
