Noble, classic Spatlese, full of rich fruits on the nose and, despite its impressive intensity, dancing elegant and buoyant.
The trademark Dönnhoff minerality really shines through in this wine which was made from perfectly ripe berries with no noble rot. The sweet, layered palate of apple and honeyed stone fruits is gorgeously intense, balanced by an electric acidity and a cool stony restraint, which almost masks the sweetness. This is like looking at Riesling under a magnifying glass, it is so pure and full of life, and whilst you won’t be able to resist it now, it will also age beautifully.
Drink 2023-2045
Country: Germany Region: Nahe Grape: Riesling
ABV: 8.5 % Bottle Size: 750ml Vegetarian, Vegan
Additional Information: For over 100 years, the Hermannshöhle has been revered as the Nahe‘s top-ranked site and the benchmark by which all other vineyards in the region are judged. It takes its name from a small mine, or “Höhle”, in the middle of the hillside. “Hermann” is derived from Hermes, the Roman god of messengers and travellers, and the name likely hints at an ancient place of worship once located here.
This site faces due south and lies 130 –175 m above sea level. Its soils are primarily blackish-grey slate mixed with extrusive igneous rock, porphyry and limestone. For generations, this marvellous site has shaped our expectations for what fine wines from the Nahe can achieve.
