Dönnhoff Tonschiefer Riesling Dry, MAGNUM 2017
Beautifully aromatic nose, white peaches, lemon zest and white flowers, hints of honey and minerals. The palate is beautifully bright showing expressive melon and citrus fruit such as grapefruit and hints of honey. Full-bodied, classic acidity and a focused palate, spicy with a good volume of tropical fruit and citrus pith. Nice freshness-richness balance, pure, intense with a smokey minerality on the finish.

Additional Information: Weingut Dönnhoff is an estate in the Nahe region of the Rhineland, and is regarded as one of Germany's very best producers, 80% of wines produced here are Riesling Pinot Blanc and Pinot Gris 20%. The Dönnhoff family has been making wine in this region since the 1750s. Helmut Dönnhoff took over in 1971 where the estate expanded to around 20 hectares, and also grew in reputation. Today his son, Cornelius Dönnhoff, oversees all operations and Dönnhoff is considered to be one of Germany’s top producers.
Grapes are hand harvested from 25 to 30-year-old vines in the Leistenberg vineyard. This is a southeast-facing, sloping site planted on clay, grey slate which captures more sun rather than afternoon heat so is delicate and aromatic and typically produces the estate’s Kabinett wines. All grapes are handpicked.
This wine is named after the soil in which it is grown (Tonschiefer translates as clay slate).
Fermented and matured in stainless steel vats and large oak barrels. The Leistenberg vineyard is classified as a VDP Grosse Lage (“great site”), the designation for the highest quality German vineyards.
