Niepoort was founded in 1842 and today is run by 5th generation siblings Dirk and Verena Niepoort who have helped cement an excellent reputation, both domestically and internationally. Niepoort produces an impressive array of distinctive ports and a smaller, but no less impressive, range of natural wines. The family continues to innovate whilst ensuring that they respect tradition and have begun to utilise biodynamic practices, relatively unusual for port production.
The wine originates from low yielding old vineyards with an average age of 30 years in the Cima Corgo Region of the Douro Valley. The grapes are hand picked and then foot trodden in Lagares, prior to ageing in small old oak casks and bottled with an average age of three and a half years. This is one of a trio of ports inspired by Lewis Carol’s ‘Alice in Wonderland’, both ‘Tawney Dee’ and ‘Ruby Dum’ are taken from the same vineyards, but over a five year period are aged differently so that the one is rich and ruby in style, while the other becomes paler and more tawnied with oxidative notes.
